Vivex is far superior to the polyurethane resin material used in outdoor lighting. Vivex is not a resin. It is basically a unique synthetic composition made up of ground marble powder for strength, latex composite for durability, bonded together with an ATP adhesive used primarily in outdoor applications. ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is an adhesive that has been tested to temperature that exceeds 130°F and as low as -20°F. It is expected that the material will withstand even greater temperatures. This material is both fire retardant and biodegradable.
Unlike resin which is cast into inexpensive plaster molds, Vivex is injected under pressure into expensive steel molds which produces a very hard and dense component. Another added benefit to injection molding is the quality of the detail of the part. The parts come out of the mold with very crisp lines and intricate detail not formerly obtainable from resin casting. This metal tooling was major investment on behalf of Maxim Lighting. The total costs for research and development and tooling costs exceed $2,000,000.
Another quality of Vivex is its strength. Vivex has over twice the strength of resin. What his mean it there are fewer problems with shipping this material and a lot fewer problems with electricians miss-handling the product and creating chips that can't be repaired. Also the additional strength allows to use the material 100% including large back plates which used to warp with the former resin material.
One very un-welcome attribute to polyurethane resin is that in its hardened form it has a very low PH and this acidic nature must be dealt with prior to finishing or paint will not adhere to it. Resin parts must go through a multi step neutralizing process to stabilize the PH or there will be chemical reaction that occurs between the surface of the part and the paint. There is also a cure time that could exceed several months.
Vivex has neutral PH of 6.5 and requires no neutralizing process prior to finishing. To maintain the integrity of Vivex, Maxim has taken over the entire production process at the factory where Vivex is produced. Maxim has our own employees monitoring every step to make sure this product is manufactured to the strict production standards developed for Vivex.
A special paint finishing process was developed for Vivex. This process was a joint effort between the material manufacturer, the pain manufacturer, and Maxim Lighting. The result is superior adhesion. The finish was tested by SGS laboratories for 300 hrs which is equivalent to over 3 year's exposure. The paint received the highest grade for UV deterioration and surface hardness which is 5 out of 5. Never before have we been table to get this test great for both tests.
Due to this testing Maxim is proud and confident enough to offer a 3 year warranty on Vivex products.
In celebration of this new material Maxim Lighting will be introducing nine brand new families manufactured with Vivex. These new families are strong in style and detail as well as offering 4 new finishes never used in outdoor before. Besides the nine new families Maxim will be re-introducing eleven of our most popular Trisyn collections in Vivex for a total of 20 families in all.
