I have a oil on canvas 36 (H) by 48 (W) (unframed dimensions) painting; all other paintings in the room have recessed lights hard wired specifically for the art (lightolier 378WHX Lytepoints elbow MR 16) that accommodate 50 watt low voltage MR16 bulbs with 65 degree beam spread illumination; this one area could not accommodate the placement of such due to a stairwell immediately across from it. All other paintings in the room are illuminated and then this one "lonely" painting is in shadow and looks pathetic. What is the best light, irrespective of cost, to illuminate this painting? There is an outlet immediately below the painting and a large window adjacent to it (thinking I could hide junction box on inside the window frame behind curtains...but most definitely prefer not to see much wiring or junction boxes...obviously.

Good light, bad hardware
I purchased the SL40 picture light for a large oil painting -- 7' x 4'. Customer service was *very* helpful while ordering and in expediting shipment. I also had a bulb burn out in the first month, and they were very responsive in providing a replacement. I would use LightingDirect again, because of their excellent customer service. Also, I chose LightingDirect because they let you return a product with NO restocking fee if it does not meet your needs. Their competitors all charge outrageous restocking fees.
I like the styling of the light, and the description and photo on the website were accurate. The portrait is lighted only about half way down, but I can’t really expect more, given the wattage of the bulbs.
I am happy with the light, but the mounting hardware is disappointing and inappropriate for an item of this cost. The hardware is designed to fit in the track of a metal frame. The site says that it can also be used to mount to a wood frame, which I did, but it is much too flimsy for this use. They provide tiny screws that I needed to replace. But the real problem is that the mounting brackets use three small tabs to grip the arms for the light. The tabs on my bracket immediately bent, so that the light hangs at an angle. The bracket should instead use a metal sleeve around the arm, but I suspect that they didn’t want to do this because it would require attaching the bracket before attaching the splice box. That was a poor decision. If you want to mount this light on a wood frame, you will have to make your own mounting hardware.
