Katrina couldn't stop this fan!
We first bought this fan back in 2002-03, and at the time it was the only fan manufactured with a fluorescent light fixture as I wanted it for my kitchen. I loved the industrial/contemporary look it had and with the two bulb light fixture (not 4, and the light cover looked like an aircraft jet engine), it lit up my kitchen very nicely when combined with my above and below cabinet lighting, depending on how much light I needed. I recall that my electrician said it was probably one of the heaviest he's ever come across which he said meant it was a well built, quality fan, not a lightweight!
Anyway, fast forward, here comes the "Big K," as we who lived on the Mississippi coast refer to Katrina, and our home was flooded like 98% of the structures along the coast were (on pilings 17 feet in the air, and received 7.5 feet of water inside our home.....do the math!!). My kitchen had 10 foot ceilings, so my fans were untouched by the water, hallelujah! Six months later we started to rebuild, and it took me a while to get around to dealing with my fans, so let's say about a year after the storm, I finally started to examine my fan situation. I loved my Midway and prayed it would still work, but having lost my remote, I couldn't know without a new one. I called Emerson, and they graciously sent me a new one, and charged me only for the shipping, for which I was grateful. I carefully wiped the fan down, rubbed out a few rusted spots with stainless steel wool, received/installed my remote, and it began to spin like the day it was first originally installed. That was a very good day for me!! Like Forest Gump said at the antiwar rally, "that's all I have to say about that!"

Great Fan
This fan was very easy to install. It runs very quietly, and there is no discernible high frequency noise emitted by the light fixture, which I've read about in other reviews. The lights were extremely bright, so I'm am currently running it with only one bulb instead of four. It is new, so reliability remains to be seen...

Worst fan ever
My friend and I bought 8 of these fans after seeing their claims and the reviews. Very disappointed. They hardly move any air regardless of the size of the room.
My 12 yyear old fans that make no such claims work a lot better
I have contacted the company for support and they don't seem to have any useful suggestions -- they suggested that the installer may not have installed the blades correctly -- different installers at my friend's and at my house and taking it down and examining it as per their instructions did not help

Excellent fan
I did a lot of research to find a fan with the right features and with good efficiency. This fan met all of my criteria.
First, I wanted a fan with a remote-reversing capability (I have high ceilings and don't want to have to get out a ladder each time I want to reverse for summer/winter use. Surprisingly few fans offer this capability, so it really limits your selection.
Second, I wanted a fan with high energy efficiency. It amazes me that there is such a huge range in the amount of air a fan moves per watt of electricity. This Emerson fan uses an advanced motor and (most important I suspect) carefully shaped plastic blades to provide the highest efficiency numbers I have seen. The manual says it uses only 17.5 watts at full speed to move over 6000 cubic feet of air!
Last, I wanted a fan that was relatively sleek looking. I hate the knobby rococo look of the typical ceiling fan. This unit looks like an airplane fuselage--crisp and businesslike.
Installation was very straightforward (I did it myself). Assembly instructions were easy to follow, and the fan seems well balanced.
My only issue was that my next door neighbor called me and asked if we had installed a new fan. It turned out that they have a similar fan and my remote was turning theirs on and off! A simple change on the remote itself took care of that (no need to climb a ladder). Not a problem with this fan, but a funny coincidence!
Overall I am very satisfied (and so is my very-particular wife). The fan is near silent, and has really made a difference in cooling the room.

This fan is awesome
I can't speak for the installation process because I had an electrician install it. Normally I can easily do things like this, but I had to run power to the ceiling joist (cathedral ceiling).
This fan is awesome! Absolutely love it. It's about 12 feet up and we used the downrod that comes with it. It makes no noise. Only when I put it on high do you hear noise, but it's wind noise. When it's on high, it's like a jet engine pushing air down, very nice! On its lowest setting is what we usually have it set to. We have a 4-month old and he likes to stare at it when he's being fed, and the low setting is enough to generate a nice breeze.
The lighting is very good. The only complaint that my wife has is that it doesn't dim. It lights up the room very well. Even with the CFL bulb that comes with it, it turns on instantly - no flicker or time delay.
We got it because it has a remote and does switch between Winter and Summer modes. We primarily bought it because of Winter; the room has high ceilings and the heat just goes 'up in the air'. This should help push it back down. We installed it in the Spring so we haven't had a chance to test out the Winter portion.
Overall, love the fan!

Excellent value for the money
This is my fourth fan of this design (previous 3 through Home Depot). It will not be the last. This fan is the best air-mover ceiling fan on the market that I know of. It is quiet, perfectly balanced and efficient. Its design and styling speak elegance and purpose. It is easy to install. The remote control is a big plus in convenience. The compact fluorescent lights are fine but I would have preferred a single circular fluorescent tube like the others I have. Small complaint but not a show-stopper. I would highly recommend this fan to anyone.

While the manufacturer claims that this fan has the best kind of motor and energy efficiency, I found that there is no light dimming. The "switch off" button on remote switches off the fan motor but not light. There is another on off button for light. Up and down arrows on remote increase and reduce the fan speed. Nothing to control light intensity.

The Emerson Midway Eco Fan
I had this same fan installed at my last house and was so glad to find the model was still available for purchase thru LightingDirect.com. This fan is so quiet that you can barely hear it running and it moves a phenominal volume of air. I like the diffused lighting as well. It is a remotely-controlled unit so you don't have chains hanging all over the place. It has a sleek look and the white finish blends in with the ceiling. Great value !

Excellent ceiling fan!
I've had this fan now for over a month and used it both to help me feel cooler and to help distribute heat from the ceiling, now that the seasons have shifted.
This fan is so quiet. I set it at the lowest setting for heat redistribution and cannot hear a thing. No buzz, no whir. Of course, as you increase the speed of the fan, you will hear the blades cut through the air, but I haven't heard the motor at all.
I was afraid it would be too large--stick out in my small living room, but because I bought the white model, it mostly blends into my white ceiling (7'9").
FYI, the fan is shipped with a 4 1/2" down rod (contrary to the FAQ which says it will be a 6" down rod).
It is quite easy to put together. I had an electrician install it, but I built it.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

very good fan but....
The Fan, namely the motor and blades and all are very well designed and it moves a surprising amount of air at full speed, At lower speeds, provides very good airflow and is very quite to boot. The 2" downrod (bought separately) makes it almost flush mount. The only down side is the lights that are CFL's ( a feature that made the fan very desirable) tend to "sing" at a high frequency, it is not normally objectionable during the day time but if you live in a very quite neighbourhood, you will hear it.
All other aspects are superb, including looks.
